A 4-year-old girl drowned in a pool at a birthday party in Columbus, Ohio, while the guests sang “Happy Birthday” to another child.
Sinaia M. Moore was found unresponsive during the party at the bottom of an in-ground backyard pool, reports The Columbus Dispatch. The pool was 4 feet deep where she was found.
Sinaia was wearing a life preserver while swimming earlier during the party, but it is believed that she removed the vest before reentering the pool, according to police Sgt. Christ Holzhauser.
The drowning occurred while the 75 to 100 party guests were distracted singing “Happy Birthday” to a 1-year-old.
"It appears that it's situational. In other words something else was going on. They were singing happy birthday to the child. So a lot of folks had their attention diverted away from the pool," Holzhauser said.
CPR was performed on Sinaia before paramedics arrived but she was unresponsive, reports Fox28. She was taken to Nationwide Children’s Hospital where she was pronounced dead.
“I see nothing that indicates that anyone was inattentive, negligent in any manner,” Holzhauser said. “It just seems like this is clearly a sad, unfortunate accident.”
