GOP-Controlled House Won't Investigate Flynn Departure

| by Oren Peleg

On Feb. 13, retired Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn resigned from his post as national security advisor to President Donald Trump, citing conflicts of interest with Russia. The following morning, House Oversight Committee Chairman Republican Rep. Jason Chaffetz of Utah stated that the committee would not investigate Flynn or the circumstances that led to his resignation.

"I think that situation has taken care of itself," Chaffetz said, notes The Hill. "I know that the Intel committee is looking into the hacking issue. ...I think he did the right thing stepping down."

Chaffetz then deflected investigation responsibilities to the House Intelligence Committee. "It really is the purview of the Intel Committee," he continued. "They really are the only ones that can look at that type of information, particularly when you’re talking about interactions with a nation-state like that. It’s not something the Oversight Committee can actually look at because sources and methods are the exclusive purview of the Intel Committee."

According to Vox, Republican Rep. Devin Nunes of California, chair of the HIC, further deflected investigative responsibility to the FBI.

This young teenage singer was shocked when Keith Urban invited her on stage at his concert. A few moments later, he made her wildest dreams come true.

"I expect for the FBI to tell me what is going on, and they better have a good answer," Nunes said. "The big problem I see here is that you have an American citizen who had his phone calls recorded."

The Hill notes that Democratic Rep. Elijah Cummings of Maryland, the top-ranking Democrat on the HOC, called for an investigation of Flynn.

"Now, we in Congress need to know who authorized his actions, permitted them, and continued to let him have access to our most sensitive national security information despite knowing these risks," Cummings said. "We need to know who else within the White House is a current and ongoing risk to our national security."
