California Mom Captures Photo of Son's Close Encounter With Shark

California mom June Emerson made a startling discovery Friday when she reviewed photos of her visit to Manhattan Beach, noticing the outline of a great white shark near her surfing son.

In one image, her 12-year-old son and his friend appear on surfboards in front of a huge wave, with the shadow of a shark a few feet away.

Emerson said the image was quite a shock to see.

“Many local surfers and lifeguards have seen this and believe it to be a shark,” Emerson said. “Of course, I told my kids it was dolphin, as we live at the beach and are in the waters here almost daily.”

Sightings of sharks at Manhattan Beach are not uncommon and have attracted a number of thrill seekers. Paddleboard Jay Dohner told the Los Angeles Times that great whites can be revolting and enchanting at the same time.

"There are two different things in your head,” Dohner said. “’Wow, that’s beautiful,’ and ‘We should get out of here.’”

Despite the allure of great whites, however, researchers have warned that the sharks will attack if they feel threatened.

Some have argued that the increased sightings are a good thing, implying that the ban on gill nets in 1990 has led to a healthy rebound of marine life.
