A Cincinnati mother says that both her son and her daughter revealed to her that they wanted to change genders within weeks of each other.
Beth McGarrity and her husband Russ noticed that their children, Russie and Aly (Note: the name and gender that they used at the time was used in this article for clarity), were different at a very young age, Good Housekeeping reported. Russie enjoyed playing dress up with girls when he was just 5 years old, and Aly, who is three years younger, liked to play football with the boys.

Throughout high school, Russie struggled with depression and was bullied after he started to dress androgynously.
After threats from the school to expel him for running into the girls’ bathroom after spilling water on a purse, a heartbroken Russie reportedly told his parents, “I did not choose this for myself."
"I wish there was a way that I could not be this way,” he added. “I would rather be hated for who I am than loved for who I am not.”

Aly also felt different throughout her life, though her parents reportedly believed that she was just a tomboy. Shortly before she turned 15, Russie asked her if she was attracted to girls and she said that she was reading on the internet and believes that she is transgender. Russie encouraged his sister to come out to their parents.
“I’ve figured out what’s going on with me,” Aly told her parents, according to Good Housekeeping. “I know that I’m transgender.”

“I’ve always wanted to be a boy," Aly reportedly added. "I never told you this, but when I was little, I would go to sleep and wish that I’d wake up a boy. Every time we did the wishbone at Thanksgiving and I won, I would wish that I was a boy.”
Her mother supported her and Aly decided that she would begin gender reassignment, including a procedure to remove her breasts, once she was finished with high school.
Weeks later, Russie had his own news for his parents: He is also transgender. Both teens went to counseling and decided to go through with their transitions.
Russie and Aly, now 20 and 17 respectively, are now known as Rai and Gavin. Beth and Russ McGarrity are elated to know that they now have two happy children who are more comfortable in their own skin.

“People ask me what I’ve lost, but I don’t feel that I’ve lost anything,” Beth told Good Housekeeping. “I have my son and daughter the way they should be.”
Russ McGarrity said that he and Beth always hoped for a boy and girl and they are glad to have that.
“As it so happened, we did have one of each - just in a different order than we originally thought,” the proud father said.
