The Boy Scouts of America will now offer a new merit badge that rewards scouts who have video game design skills. The new badge was established after the organization realized that video game design is a talent that requires math, logic and even courtesy. Those who earned their scout badges for being a camp cook, participating in water activities or their DIY skills might have a problem with it, but today’s scouts are probably happy with the development.

In order to earn the new digital dependent badge, Boy Scouts will have to “analyze different types of games; describe play value, content, and theme; and understand the significance of intellectual property as it relates to the game industry.”

The Independent reports that this will basically come down to playing four games and assessing how they work. Scouts can also choose from outdoor pursuits as well as table top, role-playing and pen and paper games. As long as they choose something that has to do with level design, story, setting and balance, it counts. Scouts can even design a smartphone app.

Interestingly enough, this is not the first video game badge that has been introduced.

In 2010, the BSA introduced began handing out a video game award that was related to understanding the ratings system for video games. To earn the badge, scouts also had to be familiar with balancing gaming with schoolwork and chores. The only games that were eligible were those approved by a parent, guardian or teacher.
