Bolshoi Dancer Pavel Dmitrichenko Sentenced to Six Years For Involvement In Acid Attack

Russian dancer Pavel Dmitrichenko was sentenced to six years in prison Tuesday in connection with nearly blinding the artistic director of the Bolshoi Ballet with acid.

A Moscow judge sentenced Dmitrichenko and two others involved in the attack, which exposed rivalries at the Bolshoi Theatre and damaged its reputation.

Yuri Zarutsky, who threw acid in artistic director Sergei Filin’s face, was sentenced to 10 years in prison. Andrei Lipatov, who drove Zarutsky to the scene, was sentenced to four years in prison.

Dmitrichenko pleaded not guilty, though he did admit to moral responsibility, and was sentenced accordingly. The dancer had apparently agreed to “roughing up” Filin, not blinding him.

"I didn't know about what was going to happen to you," Dmitrichenko said. "I still don't relieve myself of moral responsibility."

Dmitrichenko also reported that Zatrusky threatened to hurt his girlfriend if her mentioned the attack.

Filin lost most of his eye sight in one eye and 20 percent in the other. He suggested that Dmitrichenko was a threatening employee, even before the attack.
