Former Vice President Joe Biden is the favorite among Democrats to challenge President Donald Trump in 2020, according to a new poll.

In the poll, conducted from June 8 to 12, Morning Consult/Politico asked 895 Democratic voters their opinion on a number of potential presidential candidates.

Biden garnered the approval of 74 percent of respondents, while Elizabeth Warren, another potential frontrunner, was viewed favorably by 51 percent.

On June 1, Biden established his own political action committee to support Democratic candidates in future elections.

"The history of the journey of this nation is one of ordinary people doing extraordinary things," Biden wrote in a piece introducing American Possibilities, UPI reported. "We're the people who built the Hoover Dam and the Transcontinental Railroad, landed a man on the moon, cured polio, built the Internet and sequenced the human genome. And yes -- soon we will be the people who will find a cure for cancer. Thinking big is stamped into the DNA of the American soul."

On April 30, Biden flatly said he was "not running" for the presidency in 2020, but his formation of the PAC fueled speculation that he may decide to put himself forward after all. He initially intended to run as Obama's successor in 2016, but pulled out after the death of his son.

"It doesn't mean he's certain to run," a close Biden ally told CNN following the establishment of American Possibilities. "But there's no compelling reason why he would close the door. He's doing well."

If Biden chooses to remain out of the race, another strong performer in the Morning Consult/Politico survey who could emerge to take on Trump is Democratic Sen. Al Franken; the poll found that 45 percent of respondents viewed him favorably.

Several potential Democratic presidential candidates in 2020 have some work to do in order to build their national profiles, the poll suggests. Amy Klobuchar, a Democratic senator from Minnesota, has been in the Senate since 2006. However, 72 percent of respondents said they have no opinion or have never heard of her.

The same percentage of respondents had no opinion or had never heard of Jason Kander, a voting rights activist who challenged Republican Sen. Roy Blunt in 2016.

Sen. Cory Booker and Tim Kaine secured the approval of 37 percent of respondents. However, half of all participants said they had no opinion or had not heard of them, even though Kaine ran as Hillary Clinton's vice presidential candidate in 2016.

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand received the approval of 28 percent of respondents, while Sen. Kamala Harris obtained 27 percent.
