An attorney in Atlanta went to extremes to prove a point to a judge who denied her request to delay a hearing scheduled to take place during her six-week maternity leave: she brought her newborn baby with her to court.
In September, Stacy Ehrisman-Mickle reportedly agreed to take on a case involving two young brothers, but upon discovering that the hearing would take place one month later, she filed a request to have it postponed, reports Yahoo News, because she realized it coincided with her maternity leave. She reportedly told her young clients that she was going to ask that the Oct. 7 hearing be moved to a later date and that two other judges had already granted her permission to move other court dates.
But Judge J. Dan Pelletier denied her request and wrote, “No good cause. Hearing date set prior to counsel accepting representation.” Even though the attorney and new mom reportedly filed the motion on Sept. 8, she says she didn’t find out she had to appear in court until the Friday before her Tuesday hearing.
“I was in a state of panic,” Ehrisman-Mickle said. “I didn’t know what to do with my baby.”

With her truck driver husband working out of state, Ehrisman-Mickle showed up to work in the packed courtroom – with a crying four-week-old strapped to her body.
When her baby began crying, Pelletier reportedly scolded her for recklessly bringing a newborn into a germ-filled environment. The attorney says she received permission from her pediatrician, but that she still felt “humiliated” by the judge.
The same day as the hearing, Ehrisman-Mickle reportedly filed a complaint against Pelletier. Tanya Washington, an associate professor at Georgia State University College of Law, says the judge’s actions were inexcusable.
“I think the judge yelling at her for being unprofessional by appearing with her child is unreasonable, insensitive and unprofessional,” Washington said.
