An Army captain rescued a North Carolina couple from a fiery car wreck after a head-on collision between their sedan and a silver SUV.
According to reports, 67-year-old William Thompson was driving through Chatham County, North Carolina, with his wife, 63-year-old Kathleen, on Sunday when 59-year-old Mark Ricketts suddenly crossed into their lane. Ricketts’ Chrysler SUV hit the couple’s Acura sedan head on, and Ricketts’ car flipped over. Both cars burst into flames.
Army Captain Steve Voglezon spotted the wreck as he was driving to the mall with his girlfriend, and stopped to help. In a video of the incident – posted below – Voglezon was seen smashing the windows of the Thompsons’ car with a fire extinguisher before pulling William Thompson from the wreckage and dragging him safely away. He also successfully saved Kathleen Thompson from the burning car.
Voglezon, who was notably dressed in a Captain America shirt during the rescue, said he has his Army experience to thank for what he did.

“Had I not been a soldier I would not have known what to do,” Voglezon told WNCN. “The Army has helped a lot.”
John Spurrell, who recorded video of Voglezon’s rescue, rescued Ricketts before filming the heroic moment.
Though he was subsequently hailed as a hero, Voglezon said his role in the rescue was no more significant than that of rescue workers and firefighters who were on the scene.

“I was just at the right place at the right time,” he said. “People do this every day at the fire department. I wasn't alone out there, there were at least 10 of us in the community working together.”
All three victims were hospitalized and treated for non-life threatening injuries.
