A white tiger attacked and killed an Indian student at a Delhi zoo, according to authorities and witnesses.

Zoo manager Riaz Khan said the young man jumped over the railing into the tiger enclosure. However, some reports note that the student, identified as Maqsood, was leaning against the railing and fell into the exhibit.

According to witnesses, the exhibit reached only two or three feet in height.

Maqsood suddenly became frightened, according to witnesses, and crouched against a wall while the tiger approached him.

An eyewitness, Himanshu, said he was near the reptile area in the afternoon when he suddenly heard loud screams. He ran to the tiger enclosure and witnessed a white tiger attacking the student at the neck. The student was writhing in pain.

According to witnesses, some children threw small sticks and stones at the tiger.

“He suffered for the next 10-15 minutes but nobody helped him,” Himanshu said.

Himanshu noted that the police came quickly but couldn’t save the young man’s life.

“We are all in a complete state of shock,” Amitabh Agnihotri, the director of the National Zoological Park, which manages the Delhi zoo, said.

The young man’s body has since been sent for a post-mortem examination and police have begun an investigation into the incident.
