World's Oldest Cat Dies At Age 24

Just weeks after claiming the title, the world’s oldest cat fell ill and passed away.

Poppy, a tortoiseshell, passed away last Friday after a water infection and a complication with her hind legs. She was 24 years old - 114 in human years.

Poppy’s owner, Jacqui West, was devastated by the loss, though the family knew that this day would eventually come.

“We knew she was old,” West said, “but it’s still very upsetting.”

West said that her other pets, especially her remaining cats, acted strangely following Poppy’s death. The cats refused to eat on the day that Poppy died and they each seemed to be waiting for Poppy to come home.

“I think it is going to take us a little while to come to terms with it,” West said. “It’s very sad.”

Poppy was born in February 1990. She lived through Nelson Mandela’s release from prison and through five British Prime Ministers. She was recognized by the Guinness World Records in May.
