Snake-Handling Pastor Mark Wolford Dies from Rattlesnake Bite

article image

West Virginia Pentecostal Pastor Mark Randall “Mack” Wolford, who handled snakes, was fatally bitten by a rattlesnake, which he owned for years, at the Panther Wildlife Management Area, 80 miles west of Bluefield, West Virginia during a Sunday snake-handling service, reports the Washington Post.

Pastor Wolford had posted several statements on his Facebook page on May 22: “I am looking for a great time this Sunday. It is going to be a homecoming like the old days. Good ’ole raised in the holler or mountain ridge running, Holy Ghost-filled speaking-in-tongues sign believers.”

“Praise the Lord and pass the rattlesnakes, brother” he wrote on May 23.

About 30 minutes into the service, Wolford was bitten on the thigh by his yellow timber rattlesnake.

Pastor Wolford was taken to a relative’s house to recover, as he always had when suffering from snake bites, but this time he passed away.

Pastor Wolford claimed that the bible required that Christians handle snakes to test their faith per the verses in Mark 16:17-18: “And these signs will follow those who believe: in My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues; they will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them; they will lay their hands on the sick, and they will recover.”

Ironically, Pastor Wolford's father also died of a snake bite in 1983.

Here are some videos of Pastor Wolford and his congregation in action.

I guess any Christian should

I guess any Christian should have faith to believe that no harm would come to them if they stood in the path of a speeding train. Same end, train or snake. That is why God gave us the common sense not to do STUPID stuff.

Are you kidding me? The man

Are you kidding me? The man got killed because he was a... Sinner!

Ok, just kidding. The guy was a dope. And a SINNER!

I'm not much of a theologian,

I'm not much of a theologian, but it may be that God stuck the rattle on the end of those things because He wanted you to NOT pick them up.

Well, perhaps just as God

Well, perhaps just as God only stuck the rattle on the end of some snakes, He only gave common sense to certain people...

The snakes were thinking

The snakes were thinking "this creature is really big, and he's holding me in the air. If I bite him, he'll probably kill me before the poison does it's work and saves me."

The silly human thinks that means magic is protecting him rather than the mood of the snakes and pure dumb good luck. The snake's mood changes and it bites the human, and the human dies.

Elsewhere, god is doing a facepalm and saying "guys, that one was just a penis joke! You didn't really think I meant to piss off real venomous snakes every weekend, did you?"

The other imaginary gods are all laughing their butts off and saying "Damn, fool! You got the stupidest followers!"

This guy watched his dad die from the same thing. Did he really never question the wisdom of doing the same thing over and over again until one of the snakes bites him? Or did he just think his dad didn't pray hard enough before that final service?

I don't think snakes have the thinking capability you attributed to them...

The idiot forgot to respect

The idiot forgot to respect nature and it's inherent dangers.....particularly when handling poisonous snakes.

Stupid is not a crime, but it has it's own penalties, often fatal penalties.

The insanity principle is doing the same thing over and over again, but expecting different results. The far right, the far left, vegans, creationists and other extremists believe in the insanity principle, religiously.

The lord works in mysterious ways. He apparently was calling this preacher home.

"West Virginia, mountain

"West Virginia, mountain morons, take me home, country road."

But, "You must have faith!"

Let’s All Have Faith

If something cannot be proven, there is likely to be a reason for it. If something cannot be seen, it can still be proven. Gravity cannot be seen by any of our current technology. But its effects can be seen and measured. Just try dropping an iron weight on your toe. Or do you think that was a spiritual effect by god to punish you for being stupid enough to drop it on your toe?

Gravity can be measured, its actions observed and even predicted. I knew that weight was going to hurt your toe. You probably did too, so you decided not to drop it on your foot.

“But you must have Faith!” OK, I am willing to test that. Are you?

I invite you to the roof of my building. It’s not too high, between 25 and 30 meters (80 to 90 feet). I hand you a large belt and tell you to put it on. As you are buckling it, I explain that it is an anti-gravity belt I have built. I add that it repels gravitational force, just as ordinary magnets repel each other.

Like magnets, the closer it is to the earth, the more powerfully it works. So, when you first step off the roof, you’ll fall fairly fast. But as you near the concrete parking lot below, you’ll slow down until you stop a short distance above the ground. Way more fun than bungee jumping, right?

Now go on, step off the roof. What? You want to know how it works? The entire secret was revealed to me by a space alien in a series of visions. He also told me that drinking too much alcohol was bad for me. I know that to be true, so this has to be true, too. It’s too complicated for you to understand anyway. You need me to interpret its action for you and for you to have faith.

Yes, I’ve already tried it, now it’s your turn. Off you go now. Take a leap of faith.

Excellent analysis - amazing how often God is "blamed" for the stupid actions of human beings.

Your leap of faith can easily

Your leap of faith can easily be disproved by a lone jumper. Theirs cannot, try another story.

James Smith's picture

What's wrong with the story?

What's wrong with the story? Of course it can be disproved by a lone jumper. That's not the point. The point is, no one would be stupid enough to believe it. But people expect everyone to believe equally absurd claims about religion.

I'm sorry none of it was obvious enough for you. No one else has had any problem with understanding it.

I would saying dying from a

I would saying dying from a snake bite in two generations is exactly the same proof. God won't protect people from poisonous snakes regardless of your faith. Play with one long enough, and you will die.

Hmmmm..... please tell me how the two comparisons are different?

I am reminded of a joke. A man and a woman were on a cruise ship hit by tsunami. They started praying when they saw the wave coming, but the ship was capsized anyway. The man and the woman survived, and ended up in a life boat together. In the boat was a paddle, some emergency water, and some other supplies. The woman started paddling to the east which is where they came from. The man stopped her and said they had to put their faith in god to be rescued. Both of them got down on their knees and started praying. After two days, they both died of exposure. When the man stood before god, he said "God, I prayed to you to be saved, and I died anyway." To which god sighed and said, "I kept you alive when the wave hit, I gave you a life boat, and I gave you a paddle. You were just too stupid to do the rest."

I believe that this is a

I believe that this is a mighty fine example of Darwinism. Where only the fittest and smartest survive. Future generations will be much better off because of this idiots beliefs. If we could just convince liberals that snake handling will bring about the social changes they desire,we would all be better off! GO HUG A SNAKE !

Sorry... snake handling seems

Sorry... snake handling seems reserved for radical right winged religious nuts.

I have to agree......Liberals

I have to agree......Liberals and moderates are not stupid enough to handle dangerous animals in the manner that these far right conservatives do.

We take safety precautions that these fools won't bother with because they think that their jealous God will protect them.

I guess that they were wrong.

The insanity principle is doing the same thing over and over again, but expecting different results. The far right, the far left, vegans, creationists and other extremists believe in the insanity principle, religiously.

You seem to have missed an important point - most "religious people" think this is stupid too. That's why only a small percentage of the relatively small percentage of christians called pentecostals do it. That's also why in Alabama, Tennessee and other bible-belt states, it's illegal. No better retort is necessary.
