Emogene Powell was delivering mail on her regular route in Miami, Florida, when a resident's two dogs suddenly jumped over a fence and savagely attacked her on Tuesday afternoon, February 5, reports CBS station WFOR-TV.

Residents say fondly that Emogene Powell is known as the "singing mail carrier,” and she is only one year away from retirement.

The dogs which attacked were identified by the police as Pit Bulls. However, the owner says they are registered as American Bulldogs.Neighbors say they've seen the dogs in the area but they are usually chained in the backyard.

Powell had just opened the gate to a residence in the 1400 block of 191st Street, when police said the dogs at the home next door jumped the gate, according to WSVN.com.

Both dog started biting her face and arms, horrified witnesses said, according to the Daily Mail. "She was bleeding and bleeding and I called 911," said Michelle, who lives across the street from where the attack occurred.

Another witness said, “She was saying, 'Oh, Lord please help me! Help me! Lord, please help me!' She was screaming,' said the man, 'Both of her arms, her leg, and she was bloody, bloody all over.”

Witnesses say she was saved by two good Samaritans who were driving by at the time, and one used a stick to fight of the dogs and get them away from her.

The woman who lives in the home where the dogs are kept said both dogs are registered and they have current shots. She insists they are not dangerous.

But WFOR-TV reporters said they asked her to bring the dogs to the door she responded, "No! Are you crazy? Do you think I would bring the dogs in here?"

Miami Dade Animal Control said they would not take the dogs away, saying there is a process to the investigation. The Postal police can request animal control to investigate the matter under the Dangerous Dog Law to determine the fate of the dogs and whether charges would be filed against the owner, according to the report.

Emogene was rushed to the hospital, where she remained in stable condition today, according to the Daily Mail. She will remain in the hospital for a few days at least, according to a U.S. Postal Service spokeswoman

'She has my deepest sympathy, I mean, I've never gotten bit by a dog, I don't feel her pain, but she has by deepest sympathy,' the owner's girlfriend said.

One neighbor said, 'Those dogs are bad, they're vicious. They bark all night long.’ He said he wasn't surprised the dogs attacked, according to the Daily Mail.
