Putting Animal Rights Extremists on the Hate Map
Those who believe themselves to be morally righteous have a virtue -- they are usually candid in their public statements. With an absolute conviction in their world views, it is not surprising they also have a rather loose tongue. The hate and violence that lives within animal rights extremists is always near the surface. This was evidenced in a recent interview by Camille Marino of the extremist site “Negotiation is Over” with Leah Nelson, a journalist with the Southern Poverty Law Center, a well-known and respected nonprofit civil rights organization dedicated to fighting hate and bigotry in our society.
The SPLC blog is worth a read as it will raise the eyebrows of anyone that has a minimal respect for our democratic institutions, highlighting the hateful speech that comes from the fringe of the animal rights movement. Apparently, Ms. Marino had second thoughts about the views she offered to the journalist and attempted to backtrack. The SPLC Editor refused, noting that:
Marino was fully aware during the interview that she was talking with a blogger from the Southern Poverty Law Center, even volunteering that she is familiar with the SPLC’s history of denouncing radical animal rights activists like the Animal Liberation Front (ALF). She approved a transcript of her interview, writing in an E-mail, “I think you captured everything I said perfectly.” Hours later, Marino contacted the blogger and said she wanted to withdraw her consent to be quoted, saying that she did not want to be quoted on “a blog filled with the most contemptible groups of racists, bigots, madmen, and hatemongers … groups that I despise.
It was too late for that... the SPLC editor further explained:
Following widely accepted journalistic practice that once an on-the-record interview is conducted, permission cannot be withdrawn, Hatewatch decided to publish quotes from the interview.”
Of course, Ms. Marino is accompanied in her crusade against the use of animals in biomedical research by Dr. Steve Best (Caution: extremist website), Professor of Philosophy at the University of Texas at El Paso, an active contributor and participant in the NIO web-site and vocal defender of Marino’s words and actions. Dr. Best has previously been banned from entering the UK. He was deemed a threat to the “public good” and “public order” and joined a list thatalso includes Islamic extremists and neo-nazis. Here is an example of the kind of speech that probably prompted the Home Office to keep such individual away from British soil.
Hopefully, and given the available evidence, SPLC will take the logical step of declaring animal rights extremist groups like NIO hate groups. This is, after all, what these groups are and, hopefully, they will formally be recognized as such in the SPLC hate map where they belong.
Of course there are many who do not need to be told that animal rights extremist groups like Negotiation is Over and the Animal Liberation Front are hate groups. The University of Florida students newspaper "The Independent Florida Alligator" recently published an editorial strongly condemning the harassment of students and scientists by extremists, indicating that any students who may be targeted by extremists will find a lot of support among their fellow students, and in California the neighbors of scientists target by extremists have made their support for their harassed neighbors very clear. We've also seen the success of the Pro-Test movement in Oxford a few years ago, when students, scientists and members of the public joined to express their support for animal research, and delivered a decisive blow to the campaigns of harassment, intimidation and violence then being waged by animal rights hate groups in the UK.
Extremism and hate can be defeated, and the first step in doing so is to recognize it for what it is, and we applaud the SPLC for once again doing so.

"True human goodness, in all its purity and freedom, can come to the fore only when its recipient has no power. Mankind's true moral test, its fundamental test (which lies deeply buried from view), consists of its attitude towards those who are at its mercy: animals. And in this respect mankind has suffered a fundamental debacle, a debacle so fundamental that all others stem from it." -Milan Kundera
Of course what Austin F doesn't say is that the none of the AR activists he mentions were killed by biomedical scientists or their supporters, they were killed by hunt supporters in the course of a decades long confrontation with hunt saboteurs, with frequent violence from both sides (some of the hunt supporters are as mad as the AR extremists). It is hardly surprising that there have been cases where people on both sides were killed because they got in the way of (or on) moving vehicles http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2010/mar/17/gyrocopter-hunt-monitor-kills-supporter and that the drivers of those vehicles were acquitted.
I really don't see what the actions of hunt supporters have to do with scientists, you could hardly think of two groups of people with less in common.
The Sourcewatch article conveniently forgets the people like Peter Taylor who have been injured by an AR letter bombs,http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/this-britain/animal-rights-activists-sent-bomb-to-charity-705033.html, Brian Cass who was assaulted by AR extremists, and the arson attacks that have come very close to causing death or serious injury http://speakingofresearch.com/2010/11/15/we-must-reject-extremism/ but then we all know that when it comes to bias Sourcewatch is just a mirror image of Fox news.
Fox News ha. The world is flat if you say it is? Animal toxicity testing saves people's kids. Your conscience hasn't abandoned ship. I have wisdom because I'd let you be my son's babysitter.
If only you had control of the internet. Delete the voice of every person who won't take your shit, Greek's shit and Francione's shit. None of you understand what is and is not just. Partial justice doesn't exist any more than humane enslavement of other humans and animals. Even if animal testing was good science, the issue would be animal rights and freedom, not animal privileges.
Hunters who hunt to give food to their family, or to bond with their own fathers and kids, know only tradition. For some, hunting is an excuse so they can just be with nature. They must show a purpose for being outdoors for hours or days. Men just being with nature is not culturally accepted. Men hunting is. These hunters are capable of change. I have seen it. Vivisectors and former vivsectors such as Greek who continue to rationalize human entitlement to animal lives are incapable of complete transformation.
What went through your mind when you killed? Do you believe it's really different from the thoughts of men who rationalized to kick a stray dog when nobody was looking, to gas gophers in their burrows, to gang rape someone's grandmother, to bomb family villages overseas, to construct prison camps such as Andersonville? How does a man reconcile his killing with ideas of being a good father to teach his children about life. He doesn't.
Pharma will end vivisection when billions of dollars beyond its wildest dreams can be made by not using animals. It will divest itself of vivisectors like a fox finally chews off his own foot to escape a leghold trap.
Kitten killers are killers. Monkey killers too. Killers of animals are dicks. I know every lie you tell yourselves to live with yourselves. I was a dick.
was??
Speaking of Research/Pro-test's (caution! extremists) primary function appears to be to DEFLECT and REDIRECT SCRUTINY from some of the world's more notorious and controversial laboratories and drug companies, as well as "animal research" in general. Also, from violence and civil liberties issues concerning activists. Unlike their "targets", animal and environmental activists have actually been the victims of fatal, generally under or non-prosecuted violence, including the unprosecuted murders of two British teenagers. http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=Speaking_of_Research#Vivisection_.26_redirecting_issues
Marino thanks you for extending her one minute of fame. Marry her already.
The real terrorists don't hesitate to kill primates, nonhuman AND human, even 15 year old kids. You're the hater, kitten killer.
