A pony at an Illinois zoo kicked a 3-year-old girl after she tried to pet it following a ride.
Though the girl, named Sadie, is fine, her grandmother Patty Ramirez said she is displeased with the way the staff of the Niabi Zoo acted, according to WQAD.com.
“You don’t set a two- and a three-year-old down and just walk away when there’s a big animal standing next to them,” she said. “They have to have more responsibility, they have to have better training.”
Ramirez added that she videotaped the incident.

Mark Heinzman, the director of the Niabi Zoo, said that the zoo is sorry that Sadie was kicked, but that family members should keep in mind that there are risks involved with working with any animal. There is also a sign alerting families at the zoo to pay attention to children’s safety.
“As with any animal, there’s some inherent risk you have to pay attention to, just because they are animals,” he said.
