A New York City police officer reportedly accidentally shot his sergeant while attempting to shoot a pit bull inside of an apartment building in Brooklyn.

The officers were reportedly called to handle an assault inside of the apartment building at around 10:30 p.m. Tuesday. But, as they were in the hallway, a pit bull mix reportedly escaped or was let out from one of the apartments and charged toward the cops, reports WABC. One of the officers reportedly tried to shoot the dog, but the bullet only grazed by the animal and struck his sergeant in the right foot, below his big toe. Reports indicate the bullet may have ricocheted off a wall before hitting the officer.

The 36-year-old sergeant was reportedly taken to Kings County Hospital and is in stable condition, reports the New York Post. No arrests were reportedly made and the incident remains under investigation.
