A Harper Woods police officer became the unexpected victim of an incident involving two pit bulls that were running loose in the area of North Harper and Parkcrest, near the Edsel Ford Freeway around 8:30 a.m. on Sunday.
According to police officials, one of two responding officers shot one of the pit bulls as it charged at him while they attempted to capture the two animals. The bullet hit the pit bull in the head and the dog’s skull shattered the bullet into pieces. One of the fragments then ricocheted off the sidewalk and struck the second officer in the upper arm, reports MLive.com.

The wounded officer received treatment at the St. John Hospital in Detroit and was released later in the day. Both pit bulls were taken to a Harper Woods veterinarian. There was no report on their condition, Detroit News reports.
According to a media release, the matter is under review by the Harper Woods Public Safety Department administration.
