Police were called to a West Virginia home on March 8 in response to a pit bull attack. When they arrived, they found one man unconscious and another man badly injured, WTRF reports.

Officers had to force their way into an East Wheeling home to assist Roy Higgenbotham Jr., 62, who was attacked by the pit bull.

Authorities transported the victim and the dog's owner, David Wallace, 63, who was found at the apartment unconscious to a local hospital, where they were both pronounced dead.

Lieutenant Phil Redford says police believe Wallace suffered a heart attack. Higgenbotham tried to resuscitate the owner and that’s when the pit bull attacked him.

Ohio County Animal Control has removed the pit bull from the home and placed it in quarantine.

Official causes of death will be announced after autopsy results.
