A $22,000 reward is being offered for information regarding an emaciated pit bull who was discovered inside a zipped up suitcase in the Bronx.

The 3-year-old pit bull was found among trash behind a housing development by a passerby. Although there is no information regarding the length of his confinement, the dog is obviously on the brink of death in pictures released by animal rescue workers.

The dog had been deprived of food and water, then discarded on a city curb “as if it were garbage,” American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals president Matt Bershadker said.

“Such callous disregard for a living creature is unconscionable,” Bershadker said, “and should not go unpunished.”

Thanks to a generous benefactor, the ASPCA is offering a $22,000 reward for information about the cruel act. The organization hopes that such a reward will lead to an arrest and conviction.

The pit bull is currently receiving a life-saving medical treatment. It’s expected to take months before the dog can return to a healthy weight.

Once in the clear, the dog will be put up for adoption and hopefully find a happy home.
