A 6-year-old Pit Bull mix named Chester sat in an animal shelter in Long Island, New York, for five years without anyone adopting him. All of that changed thanks to one Facebook post, which resulted in the shelter receiving calls from people who lived as far away as Australia, wanting to take him home.
On Thursday, the North Fork Animal Welfare League posted a photo of Chester on Facebook with a sign around his neck that read:
"Why doesn't anybody want me? I've been waiting 5 years. Everyone at the shelter tells me what a good boy I am. So why has no one adopted me? I promised to be good and love my new family. Please maybe you are my new family/ I sit and wait for you to come."
The post was shared more than 6,000 times, reports the Daily Mail, and the shelter immediately began receiving phone calls from dog lovers living in Illinois, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, New Jersey, Wisconsin, Oregon, Michigan, Nova Scotia -- and even Australia.
Chester was eventually adopted by a family with two boys from New York. The shelter's manager, Gabby Stroup, says Chester was the perfect match for them and that he immediately began licking their faces the second they visited the shelter to meet him.
"We saw him and we felt connected." said new owner Adi Dor, who added that her two young sons had been asking for a pet dog for some time now. "It was meant to be."
