Pit Bull Attacks Baby Girl in North Carolina

| by Denise A Justin

On Tuesday, September 14, 2011, a one-year-old baby girl was severely mauled in the West Charlotte home of the parents of her mother’s boyfriend, according to WCNC.com. The attack occurred around 5:30 p.m. This is North Carolina’s second brutal pit bull attack on a small child within one year.

A neighbor told WCNC-Ch 36 that she heard a woman screaming hysterically, “I couldn’t get him off her,” and saw the mother run into the street carrying the little girl who had towels wrapped around her neck, as if the dog had grabbed her throat. Another woman was on the phone, apparently calling for medical help. The witness described the scene as very emotional and very sad.

The mother’s name is Janae Johnson, according to the police report. A neighbor in the Fernwood apartments where she lives with the toddler and another young child described her as a typically protective and watchful mother on the broadcast report by WCNC.com.

A spokesman for the police department stated that doctors at Carolinas Medical Center operated on the baby on Tuesday night. The baby had severe lacerations and was in critical condition at last report.

Although the attack was described as only one dog, the neighbor reported that it appeared there were a large number of pit bulls in the home on Pinebrook Drive, where the mother and baby girl were visiting. On the WCNC.com video report, the neighbor stated that Animal Control had sent a total of six animal control vans and “…they filled three of them.”

Animal Care and Control has not made any statement regarding the dogs. Charlotte-Mecklenburg police have not released details regarding the attack but stated they are conducting an investigation, according to Steve Lyttle of the Charlotte Observer.  . http://www.charlotteobserver.com/2011/09/14/2607012/pit-bull-critically-injures-1.html#ixzz1YCAqRX3r

January 2011 – 2 PIT BULLS KILL 5-YEAR-OLD GIRL IN NC

On January 13, 2011, in Waxhaw, NC, a five-year old girl was killed by two pit bulls and her great-grandmother was severely mauled trying to save her.

According to the Waxhaw Police Department report, the dogs attack five-year-old Makayla Woodard around 11:00 a.m. Her 67-year-old grandmother, Nancy Presson, was seriously injured trying to save the child.

Both victims were transported to Carolinas Medical Center-Union in Monroe where Makayla died a short time later from her injuries, according to police. Ms. Presson’s suffered injuries on her arms and hands from trying to pull the dogs away.  She was treated and survived.

Makayla’s mother defended the dogs, telling WBTV she was upset that the media described the dogs as vicious, even though they killed her daughter. She said they had always been friendly up until the attack.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KIGxoUTrmOc

Little Makayla was apparently trying to enter the gate to the home where she and her mother lived with Ms. Presson.  A relative said, “I don’t know if Makayla even saw them coming.’

Officials report that one of the dogs was immediately shot by authorities and the other ran from the area but was later found and shot.

Both dogs belonged to a neighbor, Michael Gordon, 23. Waxhaw police reported they had just gone to Gordon’s house a few weeks before and warned him about allowing the dogs to run loose.  http://ten8.wordpress.com/2011/01/13/5-year-old-waxhaw-nc-girl-dies-after-pitt-bulls-attack/

On March 7, a Grand Jury returned an indictment charging Gordon with felony involuntary manslaughter in the death of Makayla Woodard, according to .WBTV.  http://www.wbtv.com/story/13830756/girl-grandmother-severely-injured-attacked-by-pit-bulls?redirected=true
