Pictures: Grizzly Bear Circles, Sniffs Frightened Tourists

| by Michael Allen

A group of 10 tourists got more than they bargained for when they went on a sightseeing trip to Katmai National Park in Alaska to observe grizzly bears in their natural habitat.

The tourists were sitting around in chairs when a grizzly bear paced around their camp and terrified the hapless sightseers.

The Daily Mail reports that at one point the grizzly bear sniffed the hoodie of one of the tourists. The trip was advertised as an observation of grizzy bears "from a safe distance."

The tourist guide told the group to be still or the grizzly bear would attack. They didn't move, but were able to film the incident before the animal lost interest and wandered off.

'We were all frozen and I couldn't breathe': The defenceless group had to wait until the bear lost interest before they could get up and leave

Backing off: The bear saunters away after deciding the group was not a threat, as some of the tourists capture the extraordinary moment on camera

Too close for comfort: The tourists had no option but to sit perfectly still as the bear investigated their presence

Dangerous: The bear circled the group several times before wandering off
