PETA Outraged Over Animal Treatment in Movie "The Grey"
By Michelle Sherrow
There's no gray area when it comes to The Grey—this film has been rotten to wolves from the get-go.
Lying to PETA
Long before filming started, PETA met with a producer of The Grey and explained how animals used in movies often spend most of their time confined to chains or cages when they are not performing and may be beaten or deprived of food in order to force them to perform. The producers assured us that they would use only computer-generated imagery and animatronic wolves—but we've now learned that they reneged on their promise.
Eating Wolf Meat
Director Joe Carnage—oh, excuse me … Carnahan—ordered wolf carcasses flown in for the cast to eat so that the actors would "have a sense of the movie we were making ." He bought the meat from a trapper, meaning that the wolves likely suffered horribly in traps before being killed.
Not surprisingly, Liam Neeson, no friend to animals, was game for eating wildlife.
The Big, Bad Wolf
A film that has the potential to scare more people than "Little Red Riding Hood," The Greyportrays these intelligent, family-oriented animals the same way in which Jaws portrays sharks. The writers paint a pack of wolves living in the Alaskan wilderness as bloodthirsty monsters, intent on killing every survivor of a plane crash by tearing each person limb from limb. Yet wolves aren't aggressive animals, and as Maggie Howell, the managing director of America's Wolf Conservation Center, says, "Wolves don't hunt humans—they actually shy away from them."
Don't just shy away—run away from The Grey.

Ok I am all for protection of animals and fighting for their rights, But having read your article and seen the Trailer for the grey as well as having don't some research aren't you being a tad bit bunny hugger with regards to this. I didn't hear PETA making noise about how humans transfromed in vicious wolves in Twilight even though they were cgi. Wolves are not Domestic and they are pack orientated not family, With regards to th eating of the meat that has been done for centuries in many cultures if you go for your first hunt of an animal the tradtion is blood marked on face and you eat a sliver of raw liver, PETA maybe you barking up the wrong tree in this respect, I saw the well known animals trainer on E! News and it made it very clear that the Alaskan Timber Wolves are far from pets!
Wolves are not to be trifled with, as they are very intelligent, social animals. Though direct attacks are not common in North America, it is more than likely that wolves have a very high respect for the weapons people carry and the fact that almost all people have one or more when in wolf territory. There are documented descriptions of two or three wolves observing single hunters or trappers and small hunting parties. Yet, the wolves keep their distance and will not let the parties come close.
There are essentially seven stages leading up to attacks by wolves. Ethologist Doctor Valerius Geist of the University of Calgary, Alberta outlined seven hypothetical stages which lead to wolf attacks on humans based on historical and modern accounts(Wikipedia).
The first outlined stage is scarcity of wild game, be it due to poaching, habitat loss or seasonal migration.
Wolves begin approaching human habitations, though limit their visits to nocturnal hours. Their presence is usually established by barking matches with local dogs.
After a certain amount of time, wolves begin to frequent human habitations in daylight hours, and observe people and livestock at a distance.
The wolves begin acting bolder by attacking small livestock and pets during daylight, sometimes pursuing their prey up to verandas. At this point the wolves do not focus on humans, but will growl and act threateningly toward them.
The wolves begin attacking large-bodied livestock and may follow riders, as well as mount verandas and look into windows.
People begin to be harassed, usually in a playful manner. The wolves will chase people over short distances and nip at them, though will retreat if confronted.
Wolves begin attacking people in predatory fashions.
Is there anyone who cannot see a pattern of intelligence and certain intent here???
If the movie took place across the Bering sea in Siberia the situation is different. For some reason wolves can become man eaters in Europe and Asia, but it is extremely rare for North American Wolves to kill and eat a person.
