A horrified woman discovered her neighbor’s dog frozen to the ground after hearing her cries for help, and the dog’s owner now faces felony animal cruelty charges.

Ecorse, Michigan, resident Marylou Rotrock said that when she initially heard her neighbor’s dog, she knew she had to make sure everything was okay.

“I'm not one that goes over on other people's property,” Rotrock said. “Something told me I had to.”

When she arrived to her neighbor’s property, she made the discovery – a 10-year-old chow mix literally frozen to the ground with her leash wrapped around her, fighting for her life. Another dog was nearby.

“There was no food in the bowl and some of the excrement had plastic bag pieces in it,” she said. “So these dogs were eating anything they could." The dog’s paws were bleeding and her ears frost bitten.

The ice surrounding the dog was so thick that it reportedly took a considerable amount of time to get her out.

“It took about a half an hour to get her unfrozen from the ground,” River Rouge Animal Shelter representative Patricia Trevino said. The dog, nicknamed Elsa, was taken to a shelter where she is reportedly improving by the day. She will likely be able to keep three of her four paws.

Elsa’s owner claimed that his pet had only been outside for a few hours when she was found. “The owner said he put the dog out at 5 a.m. and we responded somewhere between 9:30 and 10:00 am,” Ecorse Police Chief Mike Moore said. Rotrock said she believes the owner hadn’t been home in days.

“I don't think he's been there for the last few days,” Rotrock said. “And that's when it was so frigid. So those dogs may have been there for days? They have been, they never come in."
