A 2-year-old pup named Peanut won the title of the World’s Ugliest Dog contest last Friday, beating out his competition with his wild hair, bulging eyes and protruding teeth.

The contest is held each year at the Sonoma-Marin Fairgrounds in Petaluma, California. A three-judge panel scores contestants in categories like special or unusual attributes, personality and natural ugliness.

The past five winners of the contest have included a duck-footed beagle, a boxer and basset hound mix with a waddle, a Chinese crested and Chihuahua mix with a protruding tongue and a Chihuahua with a missing eye and camel’s back.

Peanut is believed to be a Chihuahua and shih-tzu mix. His hobbies include curling up on plushy dog beds, playing with all of his toys at once and trying to beat up his Pomeranian brother.

Although he is healthy now, his owner Holly Chandler notes that Peanut was seriously burned as a puppy, which resulted in bald batches all over his body.

“He has helped me raise awareness for animal cruelty by allowing me to share his story,” Chandler said. “He has been the greatest thing to happen to me!”

Chandler hopes Peanut's recent win will help her continue to raise awareness for animal abuse.

“We’re trying to use him as a poster child for what can happen to animals who are abused,” Chandler said.

Chandler adds that she plans to use the $1,500 prize to pay for other animals’ veterinary bills.
