Kayla Marie Shavers, 30, was arrested on two counts of child neglect after leaving her 9-year-old son and 8-month-old baby daughter in a parked car in 38-degree weather while she went hog hunting, the Pasco County (Florida) Sheriff’s Office said.

Shavers was being held on $4,000 bond on Friday, according to jail records.

Deputies responded to a call for help and waited 40 minutes for Shavers to return to the car. When she got there, she claimed she was close enough to the car to respond if the kids needed her.

The young boy told officers that he had called 911 because he was getting very cold after 30 minutes in the car. The boy reportedly had no jacket. As he was sitting in the backseat of the police car, he told deputies that he thought “a police car would be warmer,” WPTV reported.

“She also said she left the keys for her son to start the car if it got cold. He didn’t start the car, he couldn’t,” said Corporal Sean Kennedy, according to WPTV.

Shaver, who was dressed in camouflage when she came out of the woods, told deputies she was hunting the hogs because they were tearing up her property.

Sheriff Chris Nocco credited the older child for calling police. "He may have saved that 8-month-old baby's life. So kudos to that little 9-year old boy," Nocco said. The baby was covered but was reportedly getting cold.

Nocco comented, “You’ve got to wonder, what was she thinking?”

The children were turned over to family members, according to the report.
