The Australian wilderness includes some of the most remote locations on Earth as well as some of the most exotic pests and beasts known to man. But despite Australia’s reputation for creepy crawlies, this carnivorous spider is in a league of its own.
Ant Hadleigh, a kite surfer from Cairns, caught incredible footage of a golden orb spider devouring a half-meter long snake that got stuck in the spider’s thick web. The video was taken in backyard of a friend’s house in Freshwater, Queensland.
“I thought it was pretty incredible,” Hadleigh told The Cairns Post. “A few times the snake managed to get up and attack the spider, and the spider would run back up the web. I would have put my money on the snake for sure, especially seeing how big it was.”
According to Hadleigh’s account, the snake survived the spider’s onslaught for an hour or more before finally dying, presumably form the arachnid’s venomous bite.
