An American student is in critical condition in a Johannesburg, South Africa hospital after a gang of chimpanzees pulled him inside their enclosure and mauled him severely. The man, whose name has not been revealed, was bit and dragged nearly half a mile, according to paramedics and local media.
The injured man was leading a tour group at the Jane Goodall institute at the time of the mauling. Mediclinic Nelspruit told the Associated Press that the man was being kept in intensive care and would undergo surgery on Thursday.
The photos below are eerily reminiscent of Charla Nash, an American woman from Connecticut who was attacked in 2009 by her friend’s chimp. She recently filed a complaint alleging that officials failed to seize the animal before it ripped off Nash’s nose, lips, eyelids and hands.
