Footage of a maintenance supervisor at an apartment complex in Springfield, Missouri, is attracting praise from dog lovers everywhere (video below).

Brian Ussery was walking through the lobby when he noticed a resident getting into an elevator. His dog didn’t follow. The door closed while the resident was still holding onto the leash and the dog was immediately slammed up against the elevator door and Ussery leaped into action, grabbing the dog’s leash and breaking it.

"I would hate to know what would have happened if I wasn't able to break that leash before she got to the top again," he told WGNTV.

The dog’s owner made it to the fifth floor before realizing what had happened and returned as quickly as possible, fearing the worst fate for his four-legged friend. "The guy was freaking out. He didn't know what he was going to come back to,” Ussery said. The owner, who has not been identified, thanked Ussery for saving his dog.

Security camera footage of Ussery’s quick-thinking was uploaded to Facebook, where it’s been viewed nearly 14,000 times. “I hate to know what would have happened if I wasn't able to break that leash,” he wrote in the video’s caption.

Ussery said he was surprised by how much attention the video has gotten. "When I first took the video it was just to show my fiancee. We are both huge dog lovers," he said. "Never in a million years did I expect it to be shared and viewed so many times. I posted it as a warning about leashes and elevators.”

Fortunately the dog was safe, although Ussery said she was so shaken by the incident, she urinated. Ussery’s fiancee, Nicole Greer, was also impressed. “Good job babe! So glad you were there. Now bring that puppy home where he will be safe please!,” she commented on the video.
