Margarita Negrete, 74, was in critical condition after a vicious attack by the family’s Pit Bull at 5:47 p.m. Saturday, April 20, in the 500 block of West N Street, just east of Slover Mountain, in Colton, California, the Press Telegram reports. Colton is in San Bernardino County.

A family member called 911 and, when Colton Police responded, they said they found the dog still attacking Negrete in the backyard. The elderly woman had severe head wounds. “The pit bull had already killed one of the family dogs and now had the victim on the ground biting her,” police said in a written statement.

“Officers moved in, attempting to get the victim away from the dog, when the pit bull came after the officers,” the police report stated. “The pit bull was shot and killed.” It took three shots to put the dog down, according to KTLA News.

Negrete underwent surgery at a nearby hospital for very serious head wounds. She is expected to undergo surgery also for bleeding in her leg, KTLA News reports.
