A 3-year-old child died Monday night in High Point, NC, after she was attacked by the family's male Pit Bull. The victim, Braelynn Rayne Coulter, suffered traumatic injuries to her lower abdomen.

Police said, the little girl was transported to High Point Regional Hospital by a family member, but did not survive.

Police responded to 925 Big Creek Court at 5:02 p.m. regarding the attack.

The dog was transported to the Guilford County Animal Shelter.

The Pit Bull accused of mauling and killing 3-year-old Braelynn Coulter at the child’s home Monday had been aggressive before, a neighbor said Tuesday.

Katherine Dixon, 24, who also lives on Big Creek Court in High Point with her husband and three young sons, told WGHP that, about a year ago a couple, their daughter and two pit bulls moved in next door.

A few months ago, Dixon said, the dogs broke through a fence and attacked a neighbor’s dog. “The neighbor was taking her dog for a walk,” Dixon said. She said that another neighbor ran out to stop the attack. The victim dog was treated by a veterinarian for a leg injury, but Dixon said the incident left her fearful of the Pit Bulls.

“When I’m taking the boys out to play, if the dogs are outside, we come back in,” she said, adding that she hasn’t seen the second pit bull recently.

It was one of these Pit Bull Terriers that is accused of fatally attacking Braelynn Coulter at about 5 p.m. Monday at home.

The family rushed the girl to the hospital in their car, calling 911 on the way, WGHP reports.

The call was released on Tuesday. A man asks dispatchers for a police escort to the hospital. He said he is driving a child who was attacked by a dog.

“We’re trying to keep her breathing and she’s dying,” the caller said. During the call, the man told the dispatcher he couldn’t wait for an ambulance.

He also said he didn’t care what happened to the dog that injured the child. “I’m going to kill the dog. Or it’s getting shot. Put down,” he said.

The child died Monday evening at High Point Regional Hospital.

The dog was taken to the Guilford County Animal Shelter about 9:30 p.m. Monday. The animal, which the shelter described as a male Pit Bull, is under observation for rabies, according to a sign posted on his cage. A sign also warns staff that the dog is “very aggressive” and was involved in a fatal incident.

No one answered the door at the house on Big Creek Court on Tuesday, WGHP reports. Signs on the front window and the back fence warn, “Beware of Dog.”

.According to WGHP, the family issued a statement today, which begins:

“Braelynn Rayne Coulter was a beautiful, lively three year old young lady. She was full of life. She was the light of her mama and gaga’s life and the loss leaves a hole in our hearts…”

An autopsy has been scheduled, police said.
