Depoe Bay, Oregon Cancels Fireworks to Spare Sea Birds

| by Michael Allen

Officials in Depoe Bay, Oregon canceled the annual pre-Independence Day fireworks show on July 3 out of concern that the celebration would scare sea birds roosting nearby.

Rebecca Chuck, deputy project leader with the Oregon Coast National Wildlife Refuge Complex, told the Oregonian that the move was necessary to protect birds that nest at Pirates Cove, less than a mile south of Boiler Bay, where the fireworks show is held.

However, Peggy Leoni, co-owner of Trollers Lodge, a small motel in Depoe Bay, opposed the cancelation: "It's a great loss to our community."
