Butch, a Boston terrier, was abandoned by his owner to fend for himself on the streets of Pinson, Alabama, sometimes rummaging through trash cans in order to eat.

But for one week, Alicia Buzbee and her daughter Kansas Humphrey threw Butch a party before he was put to sleep, the Daily Mail reports.

The owner cast him aside after failing to control the Boston terrier with a shock collar.

For years, Butch survived by picking scraps of garbage and he was occasionally fed by neighbors. But nobody took him in or alerted animal control until Buzbee and Humphrey found him around Thanksgiving of this year, according to

After stumbling upon Butch lying in a front yard, struggling to breathe, they took him to the Birmingham Boston Terrier Rescue where a veterinarian learned that he had almost no lung capacity, his trachea was leaking and he had a swollen heart.

The women scheduled a “humane euthanasia” for the ill pup, but not before filling his final few days with all the things he loved for Thanksgiving: burgers, pumpkin pie and new toys.

They also threw him an early Christmas party, where he sat on Santa’s lap and wore a party hat as he unwrapped more presents.

During the whole celebration, the family hoped that Butch might miraculously overcome his sickness since he was receiving medical care, but unfortunately his condition was irreversible, the Inquisitr notes. Butch relapsed Friday, struggling to breathe again.

“Before he goes, I want him to look into my eyes, and I want to look into his eyes, and I want to whisper, ‘I love you’,” Buzbee told “I want him to hear those words and to see those faces of the people who love him.”

Butch died last Saturday, and while his time with Buzbee and Humphrey was short, he left this world knowing that he was loved and they had a ball together.
