A North Carolina police dog was found dead after being left in a squad vehicle overnight.
K-9 Deputy Kevin Williams was on duty when he received a call last month that his child was sick and needed to be picked up from school, the Duplin County sheriff says.
Williams fed the dog when he got home, but made the tragic mistake of leaving “Kela” in the cruiser, myfox8.com reports.
The Belgian Shepherd dog died the next morning, according to authorities.

Kela was highly trained and could track down people and narcotics. She had been with Deputy Williams for four and a half years and was obtained through seized drug money. Williams has been reassigned to courthouse bailiff.
Duplin County Sheriff Blake Wallace told WCTI-TV that Williams was not charged because there was no proof of criminal intent.
“Williams loved the dog and is devastated about this tragic accident,” Sheriff Wallace told WITN-TV. He added that Williams “is an animal lover and would never do anything to intentionally harm an animal, especially his own dog.”
