A video (below) of a Florida doctor yelling and cursing at a patient has gone viral. (Warning: The video below contains graphic language.)
The video was shot by Jessica Stipe's daughter, WGFL reported. The mother and daughter arrived at Gainesville After Hours clinic on Oct. 9 for a 6:30 p.m. appointment, but had not seen by the doctor by 7:45 p.m.
The minute-long clip shows Dr. Peter Gallogly stepping out into the waiting room to speak with Stipe. They quickly begin arguing over how long she has been waiting.
"Do you want to be seen or not?" Gallogly asks the patient after she complains she's only had a urine test done so far. Stipe responds that she wants to go home and lay in bed.
"Then fine, get the hell out, get your money and get the hell out, see you later," the doctor replies as he begins to walk away.
Stipe calls the doctor "rude" and "disrespectful." That's when Gallogly tells her she can go to the emergency room to wait for nine hours and shouts, "Get the f**k out of my office. Now."
Gallogly opens the door for Stipe and her daughter. Stipe threatens to file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau, as her daughter adds that she captured the exchange on camera. Gallogly then takes the daughter's phone.
Stipe shared the video on Facebook, along with her thoughts on the situation:
I'm severely sick and came to Gainesville after hours with a 6:30 appointment. By 7:45 was not seen still in severe pain and throwing up in the trash can. All they had me do was pee in a cup to see if I'm pregnant .... ummm I know I'm not … I asked for my co pay back so I could leave and go back home to bed and try to be seen elsewhere tomorrow because I'm just that miserable that all I want is my bed. The Dr was mad I wanted my co pay back and was unhappy with having to wait so long and proceeded to cuss me out. My daughter recorded it because they were so rude. When he saw it was being recorded he snatched my baby's phone and shoved her when she tried to get it back. Gpd is here now but says we can't press assault charges even though it's all on tape because she has no injury .. wtf .. he took her phone and shoved her she is a minor .... never go there for medical care.
The video quickly went viral, being viewed more than 500,000 times and shared more than 5,000 times in four days. Gallogly has since issued a statement in which he said the video was edited, and that Stipe and her daughter were verbally abusive towards his staff.
"Ms. Stipe had been increasingly belligerent and abusive to the office staff, cursing and threatening them with violence, because she was unwell and had been waiting to see me for more than an hour," the statement read. "I went to the front desk only because after Ms. Stipe received her refund, she refused to leave the office, and continued her abusive behavior towards staff. Despite repeated requests from the office staff, she repeatedly demanded to see me instead of leaving."
He added: "When I walked into the waiting room, Ms. Stipe (and her daughter) cursed and threatened me as they had done with the office staff previously. At the very end of the events, I most regrettably lost my temper, and spoke to the two women in a most unprofessional manner. I make no excuses for my unacceptable behavior."
Gallogly added that he was "merely reacting to unreasonable provocations and threats of physical violence." He said, "Again, while not an excuse for my behavior, a basic reason for my reaction is that I simply regard my staff as family, and I over-reacted to defend them."
Stipe refuted Gallogly's statement, calling it "absolutely not true."
"What you saw is what it was," Stipe told WGFL. "This is just ridiculous."
