Poll: Americans Dissatisfied With Government

| by Robert Fowler

New polling indicates that Americans believe that their dissatisfaction with the U.S. government and its leadership is the most important problem that the country is currently facing. The new data arrives after the first three months that President Donald Trump has been in office.

On April 13, Gallup released the results of a new survey where the polling group measured what Americans believed to be the important problems for the U.S.

The polling found that 21 percent of national adults said that a dissatisfaction with the government coupled with poor leadership was the most pressing problems, topping the list of issues. Nine percent of respondents cited health care as the most important problem. The issues that tied for third place were immigration and the economy, which were cited by eight percent of respondents each.

Dissatisfaction in government has dominated similar polls that Gallup had conducted for decades, but the latest findings show an uptick in angst over Washington D.C. A previous survey found that only 11 percent of respondents cited government and leadership as the most pressing problem in January 2017, before Trump assumed office.

"Much of the increase in dissatisfaction stems from negativity toward the president, as substantial percentages of Americans simply say 'Donald Trump' when asked to name the most important problem facing the country," the Gallup pollsters noted.

The latest survey found that only 32 percent of national adults were satisfied with the way things are going in the U.S. Since 2005, respondents' satisfaction with the direction of the country has not risen above 36 percent. In the 21st century, satisfaction peaked with 70 percent in 2001, shortly after the Sept. 11 terrorist attack.

The Gallup pollsters concluded that the national belief that government and poor leadership is the most pressing issue for the country is on the rise with "many Americans saying that Trump is the source of the problem... However, the president's term is still new and satisfaction may rebound."

Aggregating the last 10 nationals surveys released between Feb. 12 through April 12, Real Clear Politics found that Trump currently has an average favorable rating of 42.6 percent while an average 52.6 view him unfavorably.

On April 14, a new Marist Institute for Public Opinion survey found that 39 percent of national adults approved of Trump's job performance, The Hill reports.

Breaking down the data, the poll found that while 80 percent of Republican respondents approved of the president, only 12 percent of Democratic respondents agreed, indicating a profound partisan split over the Commander-in-Chief.
