American Airlines Apologizes For Calling Couple ‘Deaf And Dumb’

| by Sarah Fruchtnicht

When American Airlines finally returned the lost luggage of a deaf couple in Texas, they found an offensive note on their baggage receipt.

“Please text, deaf and dumb,” said the bag receipt for James Moehle and Angela Huckaby.

“I cannot describe how I felt,” Moehle, 34, told ABC News. “I felt lost, angry, confused, and mistreated.”

The couple, who had just returned home from a weeklong vacation in Hawaii, wrote a letter in response to the airline.

“I assure you that neither of us are ‘Dumb!’ Rather, we are both hard-working individuals and responsible parents. We certainly deserve to be treated with dignity and respect.” Moehle wrote. “We demand not only an immediate apology from American Airlines, but also that disciplinary action be taken against the employee who wrote the unacceptable note.”

American Airlines later issued an apology and said it is investigating with employees at George Bush International Airport, aka Houston Hobby.

“We apologize to Mr. Moehle and Ms. Huckaby,” the airline said in a statement. “It was clearly a very poor choice of words. We’re confident there was no ill will, but we’ll be looking into this further and will be following up with our team members at IAH and the contractor that provides our baggage delivery services.”
