Alligator Thwarts Thief’s Would-Be Car Chase In Florida

| by Sarah Fruchtnicht

A Florida man who was targeting cars in Port St. Lucie parking lots stole at least five vehicles before an unfortunate alligator stopped him in his tracks.

Calvin Rodriguez was allegedly using shaved keys to access Honda and Acura vehicles in the parking lots of Wal-Mart, Sam’s Club, Publix and Winn Dixie.

Police spotted Rodriguez in a Honda Civic. That’s when he fled, speeding off until the stolen car collided with an alligator.

"It's pretty unimaginable that police officers would be at that point in time looking for these suspects and that an alligator unfortunately just happens to cross the road and assist us in catching these criminals," Det. Keith Boham told WPTV.

Rodriguez now faces five counts of grand theft auto. At least two other suspects with him are facing unrelated charges.

The condition of the alligator that was hit is unknown.
