To show support for the LGBT community, Alaska Airlines is currently offering airfare discounts to encourage those who are lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender to travel.
Alaska Airlines travelers are offered discounts ranging from 5 to 10 percent on airfare to certain cities holding Pride and LGBT events. Airfare discounts are also available for flights to gay cruise destinations. However, these deals are available to everyone and being gay is not a requirement for purchasing airfare on the weekends when events occur.
Alaska Airlines is marketing towards the LGBT community with an entire section of their website dedicated to showcasing LGBT-friendly destinations, mainly places that hold gay pride parades and other Pride events. The airline is also offering group rates and urges those planning special events, such as birthdays and weddings, to take advantage of the low fares.
The airline is based in a suburb of Seattle, Washington, and is worth about $8.5 billion. Alaska Airlines is the seventh largest airline in the nation and, according to The Daily Caller, has been named one of the “best places to work for LGBT equality” by The Human Rights Campaign.
Alaska Airlines' commitment to a more equitable society is highlighted on its website.
“We were elated when the State of Washington expressed the same commitment by legalizing marriage for everyone, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity," the webpage reads. "To show our continued support we are encouraging the LGBT community to travel, not only to Seattle, but to Pride events and gay friendly destinations all over the country.”
With a handful deals for flights to locations hosting Pride celebrations, the Alaska Airlines website also lists the specific events and dates. Currently, about two dozen discounts are available for different destinations, including the Gay Wine Weekends in Oakland, San Francisco and Santa Rosa, Capital Pride in Washington D.C., and Gay Days at Disney World in Orlando.
