Man Films Goodbyes After Near-Death Crash (Video)

| by Sean Kelly

A man filmed his final goodbyes to his wife and family in the hours following a devastating motorcycle crash that almost killed him -- before finally being rescued 30 hours later (video below).

Kevin Diepenbrock was riding with co-worker Phillip Polito near an infamous stretch of highway near the Tennessee-North Carolina border known as “The Dragon” when their motorcycles collided. Polito was killed in the accident, but Diepenbrock was flung from his bike and fell more than 100 feet down a rocky embankment.

Diepenbrock remained on the ground for several hours before deciding to film goodbyes to his family on his phone, suspecting he would die where he lay.

“Hey, everybody,” he says in the first of a few clips filmed throughout the ordeal. “I f***** up, that's all I can really say. At about 10:30 this morning. Been laying here ever since. About 50 feet down in the ravine. I just wanted to say I love you guys. Sorry I was being stupid, but you know that's what I do."

He says goodbye several times to his wife, Courtney, and his family and friends -- apologizing frequently. The final video, filmed as the signal-less phone was on its last stretch of battery, is pitch black, and his voice sounds frail and tired. He explains that it’s late at night, and he has so far been unable to flag anyone down to help him.

Diepenbrock later showed the clips to his wife in the hospital and decided that he didn’t want anyone else to see them, so he deleted them. He ended up retrieving them from cloud storage, however, and shared them with the Knoxville News Sentinel.

Diepenbrock was ultimately rescued after 30 hours and survived -- suffering several injuries, including two punctured lungs, 17 breaks in 12 of his ribs and several spinal fractures.
