Afghanistan veteran John Russo returned to his Florida home one year ago only to find that his beloved bulldog had been given away. On Friday, the two were finally reunited.
Russo was hoping to see Bones, who he had owned since the dog was 6 years old, when he returned to his Flagler County home last year. However, when Russo asked his ex-girlfriend, who had cared for Bones, where the dog had gone, she replied that Bones had been given away. She admitted that she had been unable to care for Bones and had surrendered him.
Russo checked multiple shelters in search of Bones, but he finally gave up looking for his lost friend and adopted a new puppy.
On Friday, a year after giving up his search for Bones, Russo happened across a bulldog listed on Flagler Humane Society’s website that looked just like his old friend. When he visited the shelter, he was able to confirm that the dog was his and the two were reunited.

"I am sorry I wasn't there to give you a kiss good bye. I will miss our walks, me feeding you and getting those huge kisses from you," one shelter worker wrote on Facebook. "Miracles do happen Bones and your story is a true miracle."
In photos of the two meeting again, which were taken by a shelter worker, Bones can be seen leaping into Russo’s arms and licking his face.
