The Satanic Temple of Detroit staged a counter-protest against pro-life advocates who were picketing a Planned Parenthood clinic on April 23 (video below).

The pro-life protesters held a banner that read: "Planned Parenthood Harvests Baby Parts," while several of the pro-choice adults, dressed in baby masks, diapers and bondage fetish outfits, rolled around the ground while other pro-choice adults shouted at them to behave.

On its YouTube page, the group states:

"The performers were then painted gold by adoring fetal idolizers. The action was intended to expose fetal idolatry and the perpetuation of fictional, coercive propaganda against the reproductive health organization.

"The Satanic Temple (TST) believes that the anti-choice movement’s obsession with and mischaracterization of the fetus obscures medical reality and a woman’s constitutional right to choice.

"Enlarged images of fetuses no larger than an inch and the personalization of mindless, senseless human embryos elevates the fetus to the status of a demigod. The strategy of elevating tiny human embryos and fetuses to a reverence creates a fantasy in which the maternal body is both erased and criminalized."

Monica Miller wrote in an opinion article for LifeSite, a pro-life news blog, that the anti-abortion protest was part of the third nationwide protest of Planned Parenthood at 228 clinics and facilities across the country. The protest was organized by the Pro-Life Society, Created Equal and the Pro-Life Action League.

Miller skewered the counter-protest:

"If the Satanists sought to provide repulsive street entertainment they certainly succeeded. But if this was a message in support of abortion and aimed to deride the pro-life cause, the message was essentially incoherent.

"One of the concerns of this group is that respect for the right to life of the unborn is religiously-based ideology illegitimately imposed upon those whose don’t agree with it.

"But if that’s the concern they wished to express, the message never got though. If a nun is whipping babies this seems to communicate that it is the Church and those who believe in God who persecute the unborn which does not comport with the actual facts."

Planned Parenthood has not been charged with selling baby parts, which is a crime. Some clinics have legally donated fetal tissue for medical research. The New England Journal of Medicine expressed its support for Planned Parenthood and fetal tissue research in 2015.
