Actor And Playwright Robert Michael Morris Dies At 77 (Photo)

Playwright, director and actor Robert Michael Morris, best known for his work on HBO's "The Comeback," passed away on May 30 at the age of 77.

Morris' "Comeback" costar, Lisa Kudrow, confirmed the actor's death on Twitter.

"We lost Robert Michael Morris today," Kudrow wrote. "He left us with many wonderful gifts, most importantly an example of what a truly good soul looks like."

In a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, Morris' representative, Sarabeth Schedeen, described him as "a quality human being." She added that Morris had recently penned an autobiography that she intends to "share with the world."

Morris worked as a high school and college teacher before moving over to showbiz in 2005, according to NBC News. "The Comeback," in which Morris played an exuberant hairdresser named Mickey Dean, premiered on HBO in 2005. One of Morris' former students, writer and director Michael Patrick King, urged Morris to audition for the role of Mickey after having based the character on him.

"Robert Michael Morris was an inspiration to write for and to be around," King said in a statement, according to Deadline. "His creativity was only matched by the joy and gratefulness he felt for each day he got to live his life as an artist."

"The Comeback" was canceled after one season but was revived for a second season in 2014.

Morris also did a number of guest spots on hit shows like "Arrested Development," "Will & Grace," "How I Met Your Mother," "Brothers & Sisters," "Community Service," "The Class" and "Running Wilde."

Morris was born in Kentucky on May 6, 1940. He obtained a Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of Dayton and an MFA in playwriting from the Catholic University of America, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

He wrote over 100 plays throughout his life.

The cause of Morris' death has not been reported.
