911 Operator Laughs as Man Reports Girlfriend on Fire (Audio)
When a bizarre accident outside of Tucson, AZ caused Lalo Delgado's car and girlfriend to catch on fire, Delgado called 911 for help, but got laughter from the dispatcher.
"Her initial reaction was laugh and giggle in the background. It was very disturbing. You're calling for help, you shouldn't be laughed at," Delgado told KGUN (video below).
During the call, Delgado said, "My car just kinda caught on fire, my girlfriend caught on fire."
The 911 operator replied, "Is your girlfriend still on fire?"
Delgado responded, "No," and then 911 operator chuckles and says, "Ok. Umm... Is your vehicle still on fire?"
Delgado then called out the 911 operator for laughing, "It's hilarious huh? I just heard you smirk... Yeah, I just heard you laugh."
"We did not perform as I expect or the citizens of this county expect us to. We're going to correct that. Certainly I can understand why he was upset. I would be too," said Capt. Jim Berr of the The Pima County Sheriff's Department.
However, Capt. Berr claims the 911 operator's behavior did not affect the response time, but Delgado disagrees: "If she wasn't there playing around giggling and would have been right on it; one minute, two minutes, every minute counts man."
The 911 operator is still on the job, while Lalo's girlfriend is slowly recovering from her burns.
