A 9-year-old fourth-grade girl brought an entire school board to its feet after delivering a rousing speech about the Florida Standards Assessment testing.
Sydney Smoot told the school board during a meeting last month (video below) that she considers herself a “well-educated young lady.”
She confidently spoke about the flaws in Florida’s current testing standards, which The Washington Post reported were similar to the Common Core testing standards the state ditched last year.
“Ladies and gentlemen of the school board, I urge you to put a stop to high-stakes testing today!” Sydney declared during the passionate speech her mother helped her write. “It is not fair for the schools, teachers and students. Parents and students, contact your governor and put a stop to all the standardized testing!”

Sydney said the one test given to students at the end of the year under the FSA was not a proper measurement of students’ knowledge and capabilities. She also condemned the form given to students for them sign, pledging that they won’t discuss the test with their parents.
The fearless girl told the school board that she isn’t comfortable with that at all.
“I have a right to talk to my parents about any and everything related to school and my education,” Sydney said.
She suggested that students take three tests a year, one in the beginning, middle and end of the school year. She added that the stress from the one test currently given to students under the FSA is cutting into something that’s also important: recess.
