An 81-year-old woman who is recovering from surgery in a hospital says her 8-year-old neighbor saved her life.
Caleb, a third grader at Carolyn Lewis Elementary School in Conway, Arkansas, woke up early in the morning on Sept. 8. From his bedroom, he could hear his neighbor struggling to call for help from across the street.
“It was a groaning noise calling for help, and I looked out the window, and she was on the ground in the garage,” Caleb said.
The woman, Sue Watson, was about to go outside to take out the trash when she fell, breaking her hip. Her family said she wasn’t noticed by people driving by, reported Arkansas Matters.

“At first I got mad and started feeling like I should run over there and help,” Caleb said.
Caleb says he isn’t allowed to leave the house without the permission of his parents, but when he saw his elderly neighbor laying on the floor, he knew what he had to do.
“I didn't really worry too much about going and doing the right thing,” Caleb said.
He ran across the street to see whether Watson, who knows his family well, was OK. When he realized that she was injured and in pain, he went back home to tell his mother to call in the emergency.

Watson’s family was grateful that Caleb acted on his instinct to save Sue.
Tom Watson, Sue’s son, said: “Very fortunate that he was aware something different was going on. Absolutely he's a hero. I mean any young kid that takes the time to help others period, especially someone in stress like that.”
The boy was even eager to help her with the chore she was doing when she was injured. “We went to the hospital and I told her I would take the trash out,” Caleb said.
Watson had surgery on Sept. 10 and will have to go through physical therapy, but is expected to make a full recovery.
Sue also believes Caleb is a hero. Hip fractures can be deadly to the elderly. People aged 85 and older are 10 to 15 times more likely to break their hip than those aged 60 to 65. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 1 in 5 patients with hip fractures dies within a year of becoming injured.
