A grandmother in Ohio reportedly found her 8-month-old grandson dead in a car in the parking lot of Walmart.

Police received a phone call on Sept. 23 at around 5:30 p.m. after the grandmother made the heartbreaking discovery in Macedonia, Ohio, Fox 8 reported.

According to an initial investigation, four children, including the 8-month-old boy, were supposed to be dropped off at a daycare center that morning by a man whose relationship to the children was not made public.

The unidentified man apparently forgot the baby in the car, Macedonia police Lt. Vince Yakopovich said during a press conference.

The man then returned to a Garfield Heights home. At around 11 a.m., the grandmother went to work at Walmart in the same vehicle. She did not notice the baby was in the car.

The baby’s caretakers realized the 8-month-old child was missing after they discovered that only three out of the four children were transported home from the daycare.

The grandmother was called at work. She checked the car and found the baby boy unresponsive. She called police, but the child was already deceased when they arrived.

An autopsy will be performed by the Summit County Medical Examiner’s office.

“It's a very difficult thing,” Yakopovich told “There was a large crowd here before and they were shocked. We're all shocked, it's a tragedy.”

Walmart issued the following statement:

“This is a very tragic situation and we are still learning all of the details at this time. We are working with law enforcement to help provide any additional information."

Police said they do not believe the baby was intentionally harmed. The investigation is ongoing.
