A 70-year-old man walked into JT Morriss & Son Funeral Home in Petersburg, Virginia, on Nov. 6, handed employees a note with contact information for his next of kin, and committed suicide.

Witnesses told NBC 12 that the man might have shot himself.

“Preliminary investigation indicates that the 70 year old male took his own life,” a Petersburg Police Department spokeswoman told WTVR. “Detectives are in the process of notifying the man’s family who may live in a neighboring jurisdiction to Petersburg. Actual cause of death will be determined by the Virginia medical examiner.”

There was a funeral service inside the chapel shortly after the elderly man committed suicide, reported NBC 12.

"I didn't hear any kind of gunshots or anything but I seen there was a body propped against the tree," local employee Sheila Harris told NBC 12. "First I thought somebody had gotten sick but I noticed they covered it up.”

Police have yet to identify the man.
