A 70-year-old pastor in Dayton, Ohio was shot and killed by his own brother on Feb. 28, according to police.

Rev. William B. Schooler was reportedly killed by his brother, 68-year-old Daniel Schooler, at roughly 12:30 p.m. when his church service was winding down, according to the Associated Press.

Police arrested Daniel at the church and plan to charge him.  Officials say they do not know what led to the shooting but said the reverend was the only intended victim.  About 20 people were inside the church at the time of the shooting, according to a CNN affiliate.

The brothers’ niece, Joyce Napier, told a local newspaper that Daniel had a history of mental illness which she believes played a role in the killing.

"I would think it has to be something's going on in his head to do something like that, because we were raised to love. Family matters - that's the way were raised."

William Schooler was a prominent member of the Dayton community.  He was a teacher during the 1970s and served as a principal within the Jefferson Township school district for more than 20 years, AP reports.  He held various other positions in community organizations and in local governments.

Dayton City Commissioner Joey Williams said he and Schooler had discussed ways of reducing violence within Dayton in the past.

"For him to be a victim of violence is just extremely saddening," Williams said.

Police have not yet identified a motive for the shooting, according to CNN.
