4-Year-Old Boy Dies After Uncle Falls On Him With Knife, Oklahoma Police Say

A 4-year-old Oklahoma boy died last weekend after his uncle fell on him with a knife, police said.

The boy, Bralyn Shively, was reportedly in his backyard in Oklahoma City with his uncle, 35-year-old Chris Coates, who was visiting from Iowa.

Coates was lying in a hammock whittling a piece of wood with a knife on Saturday. Bralyn was nearby pushing on the hammock. Suddenly the hammock broke, and Coates fell on Bralyn. The knife was lodged in the boy’s chest.

Coates yelled for someone to call 911 as he attempted to perform CPR on the child.

Paramedics were called and Bralyn was rushed to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

“All evidence points toward this being an accidental death,” Oklahoma City police Master Sgt. Gary Knight said in a release Monday.

One of six children, Bralyn’s father says Coates was the boy’s favorite uncle at that Coates did everything in his power to save the boy.

Coates is a master woodworker who the family says is always whittling something.

“Bralyn showed love on his family and friends, and everyone loved him,” the family said in a statement to News 9. “Bralyn was loving, imaginative, intuitive, spontaneous and feisty. Bralyn is such a blessing to us, and we love him very much! We miss him terribly, and his passing has left an emptiness in our lives.”

Bralyn just celebrated his fourth birthday last week.

No charges have been filed in the stabbing. The Canadian County district attorney office is expected to make a formal ruling in the case.
